HELL YES -- Beauty Bar in Portland

T u e s d a y , M a r c h 2 , 2 0 1 0
For the past two years, Ira and I have taken a liking to a spot called Beauty Bar.

(YES -- THAT SOUNDS LIKE THE MOST SUSPECT PHRASE OF ALL TIME.)

With Bars in Vegas and SF that are absolutely awesome, we always figured that Portland would be an ideal destination to open up in next.

Considering every experience there has been filled with hipsters, PBR, skinny jeans and awkward dancing....Beauty Bar finally figured it out...and this Saturday they'll be opening the doors to a 2,400 sq ft PDX spot off SW 1st Street.

Some May Know: Keith Moved

T u e s d a y , N o v e m b e r 1 0 , 2 0 0 9

Some of you may know I moved out of the sneaker residence and into a state of solitude where I focus on studies and look towards a fuzzy future. Out of my rebellion comes education and a run-down townhouse home to a number of characters and a family of raccoons. Below I've provided a montage of pictures depicting my new stomping grounds.

On a side note----Like streetwear brands, Blogs continue to disappear at a rapid rate and it is my hope that this doesn't happen to ours. What do you say B.O.P. Members? What do you say to a resurgence? It wasn't long ago that we declared 2009 as ours!

The Manliest City I Know!

W e d n e s d a y , M a r c h 1 1 , 2 0 0 9
Okay, it's not Portland. Recently a poll from Business Week described us as being the "Unhappiest" City in the country. What kind of shit is that? Now we are at the bottom rung of "Manliest" Cities. We have been ranked the 47th "Manliest" City out of 50. The poll comes from Sperling's Best Places. Nashville tops the list that uses factors such as the number of Sports Teams (c'mon MLS,) hardware stores, and monster truck rallies...etc. This is preposterous.

Might I remind you people that my native Portland is home to a syndicate of Strip Joints. I'm sorry but that is much more manly than your monster truck rallies. We have more Strip Clubs per capita than any other city in the United States, probably world. I know that this year Springfield, also located in Oregon, was pushing for that title but they are too small to matter. Although I must give Springfield its proverbial props. Seven strip clubs in a town of 58,000, that's 12 per 100,000. Seattle is ranked number 40 on the "Manliest" list and yet in 2006 only had four strip clubs. 1,2,3,4

Major League Soccer in Portland?

W e d n e s d a y , M a r c h 1 1 , 2 0 0 9

It is all entirely possible that we could see a MLS Portland team by 2011. Paulson, the owner of the Timbers, is apparently trying to make it as painless to the taxpayers as possible and believes this is a risk worth taking. You can read the story here.

If it goes through it means updates on PGE park to make it a full on Soccer stadium and a new Beavers Baseball Field. That will change up the whole Thirsty Thursday dynamic. You can't help but love drinking until you shouldn't drive and then walk right outside of PGE and step onto a Max train. It was so simple to not get a DUI.

We'll have to wait and see, but the Soccer bloggers are saying with the addition of MLS in Seattle this year the two front runners for 2011 are Vancouver B.C. and Portland, which would create a desired NW rivalry.

Portland Recapitulated: The Nines Hotel

T h u r s d a y , M a r c h 0 5 , 2 0 0 9
For my girlfriend's Birthday, I decided to take her on a little vacation in town. We spent one incredible night at The Nines Hotel, located in the old Meier & Frank building (now Macy's) in Downtown Portland. A quaint entrance on the bottom floor consists of four elevator doors, a concierge and usually two staff/valets on hand. When you enter the elevator, the only floor you can reach without a key card is the 8th which is home to the main Hotel lobby and Urban Farmer, The Nines Steak House and Bar.

We set off to retrieve our reservation first then took a peek around the art filled lobby and Urban Farmer. The set up for Urban Farmer is effortless offering a traditional sit down dinner area, a common area that consists of different setups for hanging out where you are able to order drinks and Happy Hour items from the Bar. The last area is the Bar where we would find ourselves a bit later after checking into our room. The Bar Happy Hour offered a number of great dishes that included an American version of Kobe Beef sliders, a well seasoned and battered bouquet of fries, smokey fondue and a foul looking but delicious black bean soup. Not to mention we tried our hand at the daily punch, and for $3 it tastes amazing and gets the job done quickly.

Afterward we went back to the room for awhile before meeting up with some friends at EastBurn (review coming soon.) We headed back to the room after a few drinks and retired in the comfortable perfect setting of our hotel room at The Nines.

Other things to consider, the 24 hour fitness and business center, and there is Wi-Fi of course in every room. I think Hannah even updated her Facebook a couple times from the room. There is also a great deal going on until April 18th where you can book a room at this lux hotel for only $99. If you head up the room ladder a bit all the prices come down too, the deal isn't only limited to the $99 room. The same discount you receive on that room is the same if you choose a better room. The $99 rooms look over the Atrium/Urban Farmer/Lobby area while for just a bit more you can get a room with an even better view. Ask for something facing the Southside or Pioneer Square. I did this and they accommodated my every need. They even said if I didn't care for the room upon check-in they would gladly switch it right away.

In the near future, another restaurant will be opening on the rooftop allowing for a wonderful dining experience and a spectacular view I'm sure.

Around The Nines you will find a ton of local art in the rooms, lobby...etc. This was right outside the elevator on our floor.

Not pictured here is the business desk off to the immediate left; it's quite large actually. The king sized bed was plush and comfortable while our attentions were hardly ever focused on the extra large flatscreen. However, it did carry some of the hottest theatrical releases of the past two months.

The Bathroom was amazing it featured a plethora of towels, about 16 to be exact and in all sizes. The biggest towel could wrap my girl and I easily. The shower was amazing too, large enough to fit four people in it.
