S u n d a y , A u g u s t 1 0, 2 0 0 8As some of you out there may or may not know, the Olympics have officially started and THE B.O.P. will be bringing you fringe-level "coverage" for the remainder of the games.
Aside from the Ralph Lauren sponsored garb, the US had another bright spot going on at the opening ceremony: Flag bearer Lopez Lomong.
Lomong, who was one of the lost boys of Sudan, was voted in as flag bearer after a member of the US contingent (and fellow Team Darfur athlete) had his passport rescinded. The move helped spotlight one of the US's best up-and-coming and charismatic athletes, while helping the team take a silent stance against the Chinese support of the Sudanese government.
He might not be the best looking LoLo on Team USA, but his story is one that's consummately American and I'm not even going to be able to scratch the surface of, so here's a link to a much more elegantly told version. It's definitely worth the read. It's short. You can do it.
